**1947**

The Dead Sea Scrolls were first discovered in **1947** by Bedouin shepherds in a cave near Khirbet Qumran on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea.

While additional scrolls were found through 1956, the initial and most famous discovery year is universally recognized as **1947**.

This is the year cited by the Israel Museum, the official Dead Sea Scrolls project, Britannica, and the Library of Congress.
